Horse Pillow Rougui 2023 – Zhengyan

63.00

Tea – Yancha Wulong
Harvest – Spring 2023
Origin – Ma Zhen Feng, Zhengyan

This Rougui comes from the Zhengyan protected area of Wuyishan. Due to the impervious nature and small size of this area, the tea produced here is not a large amount. Zhengyan tea, especially Zhengyan Rougui, is highly prized because this terroir can give tea a special flavor called Yan Yun, a name that can be translated as the “melody of the cliffs”.

Some teas you can drink lightly, some are so rich and flavorful that you must give them all of your attention to absorb the complexity of the cup and slowly sip through them in a focused session. Just like you cannot eat a whole meal in a bite but need to savour it slowly.
This is one of those satisfying teas, a blend of complex flavors with a pronounced charcoal roast and the rich fragrance notes of Rougui enriched by Yanyun and cozy roasted depth, that sing the ecstasy of the soul and senses.

Recommended for experienced drinkers.  We strongly suggest to save a cup from the very first infusion/rinse aside to drink as last at room temperature.

Price is for 50 g.

Yesheng Hongcha 2022

21.00

Tea- Black Tea (Not Smoked)
Harvest – Spring 2022
Origin – Tongmuguan, Wuyishan

This tea was produced in Tongmuguan, a Unesco world heritage protected area where tea trees grow in a pristine environment, situated at a much higher altitude than other parts of the Wuyi mountains. The name Yesheng Hongcha meaning “wild growing black tea” as usual refers more to the style of cultivation that is not in the typical farm pruned rows but rather planted more sparsely and “left to grow”. These trees are not “wild plants”, they are tea trees but they adapt to the environment and produce irregular and ugly leaves with a quite an interesting flavor.

While famously the black tea from this area was smoked over pine trees (the original so called zhengshan xiaozhong/lapsang souchong), this version is produced from high quality material grown in this area but dried without smoke. As a result the tea has a very clean flavor expressing the character of Tongmuguan Xiaozhong. As a result it has a balanced taste with a very clean, delicate sweetness and a smooth and cozy mouth feeling. It is low in fragrance and a bit different in taste compared to most chinese hongcha/black tea. The tea soup is a lighter shade not deep red color. Its qualities are in the balance of flavor, subtle fragrance and soft mouthfeel.

Yanyun Tasting Box

70.00

Rou Gui is one of the most popular yanchas and for good reason. It’s considered the best cultivar to express the so called “Yan Yun” flavor, “the melody of the cliffs”, a special flavor that tea grown in certain terroir of Wuyi mountains acquire.

The richness of flavors of Rougui makes its taste vary a lot depending on terroir and processing. Here in this box there are samples of Rougui teas from different locations of Wuyishan and different production style. This box can be used as a discovery tool for those who want to better understand what is the Yanyun flavor or be like a nice collection of extremely good teas to taste.

If you are looking to discover the yanyun flavor I strongly suggest to get at least one can of Rougui 2021 to drink as a reference of a clean Rougui flavor. To compare that one with any of these is in our opinion the best way to understand these teas. If it’s all a bit confusing and bizarre remember that this box is just a taste, the more you drink the more clear yanyun flavor will be.

The selection and price of the box varies depending on availability so check this page before buying.

We recommend to save the very first brew of these teas to drink as last when cooled down, this way the yanyun flavor become the most obvious and easy to see.

Old Yancha Brick 2007

39.00

Tea – Aged Yancha Wulong (circa 2007)
Origin –Wuyishan (Ban Yan)

This conveniently shaped chocolate bar style brick can offer a taste of aged yancha. Each brick is around 100g in weight and has 12 square pieces of circa 8.3g quite easy to snap apart.

The price is for 50g (6 square pieces or half the brick).

Being a blend, there aren’t many informations about the material but we don’t think it matters too much to know precise age and which cultivars were used. The tea has strong  “chen” (陈 old) flavor and is really nice to drink with a cozy and comfortable aged feeling.

Boiling this tea is  recommended to bring out the aged flavors warming you up for many brews.

Price is for half brick, or 6 individual square pieces, circa 50 g.
(To receive a complete brick you have to buy two of this item. Note that these bricks are quite fragile and it is likely it will not arrive in one piece)

Peach Rougui 2021

38.00

Tea – Yancha Wulong
Harvest – Spring 2021
Origin – Can’t say for sure, Wuyishan

Rougui is one of the most beloved Yancha cultivars combining depth of flavor and powerful aromatics that can change and reflect specific terroirs making each Rougui special.

This Rougui has a strong natural sweetness and a fruity profile that might remind some drinkers of peaches.
The sweetness combined with the rougui character and a nice aftertaste with some yanyun make it a delicious tea, smooth but with the complextity to never feel boring nor overwhelming.
A lovely tea to drink for any occasion and an interesting rougui to explore with a very good price/quality ratio.

As a note, this tea was sold to us as a tea from a location in the Zhengyan area. It is very nice tea but it is a claim that I can’t be sure of and therefore I wrote the location as unknown. Might be true, might not be true, in any case, the tea tastes good so I don’t think it matters where is from.
